The News-Press restaurant critic Jean Le Bouef is out and about during The Beaches of Fort Myers & Sanibel Restaurant Week, sampling something from every participating restaurant through Oct. 20. For Old Florida charm, Tarpon Lodge is hard to beat.

The Pine Island restaurant is housed in a former family fishing lodge built in 1926. Its creaky floors and brick fireplace take you back to simpler times. The air conditioning, full-liquor bar and talented kitchen staff, however, make you thankful for modern conveniences.

Hope for the blue crab chowder as the soup of the day on the restaurant week menu, and rest assured the daily catch is some of the freshest around.
